The fourth grade of primary school represents a major shift in the approach to learning for children. Firstly, the teaching process changes from the integrated model to a more analytical one. Secondly, more systematic learning enters. In this talk, we will look at how to make this shift more bearable for both teachers and learners and how to execute the activities so as to maintain the elements found in the young learners classroom and introduce those typical of more 'mature' primary learning.

Having been exposed to English for some years, most lower-secondary learners have a substantial knowledge and some experience in the language.

Yet, they still find it problematic to express ideas they typically express in L1. This presentation will show ways of how to make learning English more accessible to learners and to gradually shift from passively reproducing the language to more context- and content-based language use.

Secondary school learning is often looked at through the prism of Matura. As a result, most teaching and learning is geared towards the school leaving exam. Bearing in mind that secondary school consists of only three grades, effective learning is minimised to the first two years with year 3 being almost exclusively devoted to revision.

In this talk we will look at how to overcome the problem by showing ways of how to marry exam preparation and learning new material so that one supplements, rather than excludes, the other.
