This means that academic, research-based ideas have to be turned into practical, tangible tasks that can be used on everyday basis in the classroom. In this talk we will take a look at learner-centred activities that support step-by-step effective learning of English and the personal development of our students.

Many of us have experienced the stress of taking a driving test. Everything has to be done 'by the book' - or we fail. Yet, once out on the road armed with our license, things start to be a little different, and we develop our own way of driving appropriate to the prevailing conditions.
There are many parallels in the education system.

Conflicts exist in terms of school needs versus student needs, in terms of exam requirements versus language development - in other words requirements of the system versus requirements of the real world. This session will investigate ways of providing a sense of balance between these two apparently conflicting forces.

As teachers at the beginning of a new decade, we are now encountering the kids of the early 90's in our upper-secondary classes. While for many of us the 90's seem like only yesterday, for our students the last ten years represent the major proportion of their lives so far.

Much has changed, we might say, but for our Matura-age students modern phenomena such as Twitter, 3G-phones and TV on-demand are simply multitasking tools which they utilise to organise their busy everyday lives.
Keeping up with our teenagers and helping them to make real progress means using what we know about the reality of their lives to shape our language and exam preparation courses. This session will therefore look at ways of capturing our teens' imaginations through the use of authentic topics and real world skills as we prepare them for Matura and will also suggest approaches designed to help us to become multi-tasking teachers.
