The Gimnazjum Examination is probably the first real examination that our students have taken in English. The step from our communicative classrooms to the test tables can seem daunting and it is, unfortunately, all too common for students to underperform in tests, to struggle to apply what they know in the best way. This session will look at exam preparation from the teacher's and - more importantly - from the student's point of view investigating what works and what does not and demonstrating practical classroom ideas for exam preparation, including ideas for teaching exam skills and for revision.

We all strive to personalise our lessons and to individualise our teaching. We do this because it motivates and it works; students learn best when they are engaged. Yet when examinations come along all too often we succumb to the temptation to plough through the material, sacrificing our best practice on the altar of exam preparation. This session will show that the principles of personalisation and individualisation can still be relevant to exam teaching; indeed, that the best exam preparation is indeed personalised and focused closely on the needs of the individual. The session will include practical classroom ideas for preparing learners for both the written and the oral parts of the exam.

The new Gimnazjum exam has been with us, yet virtually, for quite some time. Now, that the standards, task types and exam sheets have been made available to the public, it is possible to gear our teaching towards more orderly and thorough exam preparation. Based on the new Repetytorium, the talk addresses the issue of teaching English through exam and exam-like tasks.

Through the prism of exam duties: task awareness and form-content battle

Virtually any language exam is totally predictable in form. Therefore, it seems logical that while preparing the learners we focus on task types. The process, however, is usually predictable too, as it invariably amounts to repeating the same patterns over and over again thus breeding classroom boredom and more importantly, shifting learners’ attention from content to form. This talk will discuss the importance of task awareness at the Matura level but also how to strike the right balance between form and content so as to foster skills-based competence.

What are learners tested on in the new gimnazjum exam? How can we help them prepare effectively for what they will meet in the exam room? Answers to these questions and more will be considered in this session, along with a look at how we can keep parents informed as to what is going on in the exam preparation classroom. The session will aim to show that exam preparation can be effectively balanced with continual language and skills development in an engaging, motivating and ‘teen-friendly’ way. In the course of the session we will highlight elements of the new Pearson Longman course ‘Longman Egzamin Gimnazjalny’.
