The Teachers - wstęp do kwietniowego numeru

Connection is everything …

“In a world of six billion people, it only takes one to change your life.” From the moment when Walter Vale, (the main hero of “The Visitor”), a teacher and a writer, who has lost his passion and seems to sleepwalk through his life, accidentally meets a young man, the series of unexpected coincidences make him awaken to a new world and new life. For us, spring time can be this awakening, as many of us, especially at this time of year, feel an irresistible desire for change. So, along with a new hairdo or wallpaper, it might be a good idea to refresh your
teaching ideas. The Teacher is at your service.

Alina Cirlanescu in her text “Additional learning sources: movies” tells us that “innovation is one of the key ingredients to successful teaching and successful learning. Innovation, change and adaptation to change are prevalent at all levels of life; therefore, teachers can only benefit from these and develop them when planning new activities for their students”. In her first part of her collection of ideas, the author uses the film, “The Visitor”, as an innovative form of extracurricular activity to use in the classroom.

Another method of improving teaching quality comes from introducing games to the classroom. One of them is a commonly known jeopardy game, which may be used to revise different vocabulary aspects. In her article, “You don’t jeopardize much in this jeopardy game”, Renata Wąsowska presents this activity step by step and makes us more aware of the benefits it brings.

In the heat of introducing innovations this spring, we should not forget about our children. Many teachers seem to be not very enthusiastic about using action games during lessons, claiming that they can result in chaos, lack of discipline or other classroom management
problems. To convince them of changing their minds we recommend the article “’I like to move it, move it’; movement games and activities with children” by Weronika Sałandyk. Her text
shows simple ideas how to incorporate movement in your lessons and, at the same, time bring fun and enthusiasm to the classroom turning children’s natural energy into an effective
learning strategy.

Enjoy your well deserved spring season, and make good use of the presented ideas to reconnect with your students. Maybe, you are the person who will change their lives.
