During this workshop, you will find out more about the history of April Fools Day in the western world, and we will also explore some of the most famous and successful April Fools pranks and hoaxes of all time. But be warned: If you are not careful, you may end up being made into afool yourself.

„The British Apollo or Curious Amusements for the Ingenious” was a popular magazine published in London at the beginning of the eighteenth century. Readers were invited to send in questions, on any subject whatsoever, and the editors would do their best to provide answers, which took up the first half of each number. In 1708, someone wrote in to ask, „Whence proceeds the custom of making April Fools?” The question is one that many cultural historians are still asking today. One of the most popular theories about the origin of the holiday refers to calendar reform in sixteenth century France. In 1564, the French changed their calendar by moving the start of the year from the end of March to January 1. Those who stubbornly clung to the old calendar system and continued to celebrate the New Year on the „old date” would fall victim to numerous jokes and pranks, such as having a paper fish stuck to their backs. Thus was born the idea of „Poisson d’Avril”, or April Fish which, to this day, remains the French term for April Fools.
