In his free time Czesław is an amateur guitarist, a long-distance runner and a keen concert-goer. Married, with the
lively and lovely Zuzia and Bartek completing the household. Finally, enigmatically as it sounds, he is quite often referred to as ‘the xero-brother’.

the University of Gdańsk in 2000. He has been teaching for 15 years, starting from a
group of 10-year-olds, moving on a year later to teach Grammar School students for three

Creativity and communication through story and drama

This session shows how a well-managed, whole-child approach to storytelling and drama develops pupils’ potential for creativity and helps them to become confident communicators in English. We will use an integrated combination of storytelling and drama techniques to explore ways to engage children in relevant issues and to link learning English to authentic culture and real content. We will also explore the role of storytelling and drama in developing positive values in today’s world.

On the road. Balancing teaching and testing towards ‘sprawdzian szóstoklasisty’

The upcoming sprawdzian szóstoklasisty has caused feelings of concern among students, their parents and us - their teachers.
We believe that we can ease this anxiety once we understand that, in the case of 12-year-olds, successful exam results are more of a side effect of effective teaching strategies rather than of obsessive exam preparation.

In our session we’d like to show how to teach with the exam in mind and how to strike a balance between teaching and testing.
Realising that there are a number of both linguistic and cognitive challenges awaiting our students, we want to suggest ways of dealing with these difficulties. We’d also like to demonstrate that sprawdzian szóstoklasisty is not an end in itself, but rather
a stopover on our students’ journey to foreign language communication. Hope you join us on this journey :-).

Save as.TXT. Towards successful writing for the new ‘matura’

A group of words isn’t necessarily a sentence and a collection of sentences doesn’t always make up a successful text. It can be observed that with the new matura changes coming into force in 2015, the marking criteria for writing will be modified to incorporate aspects of text coherence and cohesion. For this reason, we’ll need to devote a considerable amount of time to text-based and text-centred teaching and show our students how to create well-organized texts of their own.

Bearing all this in mind, we’d like to present an analysis of these new requirements and grading criteria, based on a selection of authentic samples of our students’ texts. Our goal will be not only to show what makes a text (in)coherent and (in)cohesive but
what to do in everyday teaching to genuinely help our students write better-quality texts, for exam and beyond.
