If there is one, enduring, cross cultural, pedagogical received wisdom it is that children learn through stories. From ancient Greece to modern times teachers have found stories to be the best way of communicating important new concepts and ideas. Stories appeal to children of all learning styles whether visual, kinesthetic or auditory. They help them make sense of their lives and listening to and the creation of narratives can facilitate the development of literacy skills in several important ways. This workshop will discuss how.

As English teachers we are naturally concerned primarily with the acquisition of language skills. However, as pedagogues we have a whole plethora of goals and ambitions. We need to focus not only on how our pupils will learn English but as child-centred educators we also need to focus on the cognitive, social and emotional needs of our young learners as well.

Writing seems to be a very common activity and a powerful learning tool. Frequently, it is set at the end of an English class to practise new structures and words, or it is set as homework. Perhaps now it’s time we revised our attitude to writing and recognized its communicative value as well. After all, due to the popularity of the Internet blogs, electronic mail or simple SMS exchange, even young teens can experience how important communicative writing is.

During the workshop we’re going to LOOK into the nature of writing skills and plan lessons for upper-primary learners which develop their linguistic abilities, learning strategies, and additionally, are rewarding, communicative and fun! The session will be entirely based on practical tasks and will enable us to have a closer LOOK into the new teaching strategies involved in learning-to-write and writing-to-learn!
