Nauczycieli klas 1-3 chcemy wprowadzić rzetelnie w projekt Nowej Podstawy Programowej. Naszym celem jest pokazanie, co zmieni się już wkrótce w Państwa codziennej pracy z dziećmi i jak skutecznie stawić czoła nowym realiom, mając do dyspozycji kurs Bugs World, następcę rewelacyjnie przyjętej serii Bugs, w tym zwłaszcza dwa zeszyty ćwiczeń do każdej części podręcznika, umożliwiające pracę zarówno z sześcio-, jak i siedmiolatkami. Ponadto w 4 miastach (Lublinie, Katowicach, Sopocie i Warszawie) zaprezentujemy szereg pomysłów na uatrakcyjnienie pracy z dziećmi mając na uwadze ich wszechstronny rozwój. Podkreślimy znaczenie korelacji treści międzyprzedmiotowych oraz zagadnień kulturowych w nauczaniu języka obcego.

Activities that work! On keeping learners truly engaged a bit longer
A class of learners is always made up of individuals. All too often, they come to the classroom with agendas entirely different from ours - to copy maths homework, to gossip, to eat a sandwich etc. As a result, they are not easy to engage and even more difficult to keep motivated.
A successful pedagogical response consists - to a large extent - in careful planning and organisation, with a clear outline of the lesson and a smooth transition from one activity to another. For all of this strategic preparation to work, however, we also need a variety of age-relevant topics, coupled with genuinely engaging activities and tasks, possibly with some personal touch.

Communication first. The case for or against grammar?
Having analysed the examination standards, many gimnazjum teachers seem to wonder: ‘How much grammar do I need to teach for the sake of the exam?’ The specifications issued by Centralna Komisja Egzaminacyjna do not seem to put much impact on students’ knowledge of structures and rules, or indeed on linguistic accuracy. Yet it somehow doesn’t feel right to dispose of grammar altogether, especially that, although condemned by many professionals, it is still very much expected by learners. Finding a golden means in this situation involves changing the question from ‘how much grammar should I teach’ into ‘what attitude to grammar should I adopt?’
In this session, my aim will be to show how – when teaching grammar to gimnazjum learners - we can give priority to meaning over form, promote acquisition by meaning-focused use, and create opportunities in the classroom to DO thing with language. In short: how to look at grammatical structures predominantly as an instrument of communication and a way to convey meaning in various situations and contexts.

There is more to reading than…
When we think of reading comprehension, the immediate associations that come to our minds are skimming, scanning, pre-, while- and post-reading stages, reading strategies and perhaps a few other well worn concepts. In this session I shall depart from the traditional way of looking at receptive skills, with an eye to approaching reading from the perspective of the four strands of a language course, namely meaning-focused input, meaning-focused output, language-focused learning and fluency development.
The workshop will offer some guidelines for teaching reading, according to the above-mentioned strands, taking into consideration text authenticity, comprehension threshold and structure-building framework. The session will also address the question of what makes a good intensive reading exercise as well as refer to the connection between first language literacy and developing reading skills in a foreign language.
