That’s the whole trick, isn’t it: finding ways for the foreign language to be retained for much longer than the duration of a class so that it is ready to use when needed, and not just for formal testing purposes at the end of the junior high programme, but hopefully beyond that, outside the school, in real-life situations.
In professional terms, it’s about teacher’s input becoming students’ intake, thus leading to output. From what we know about the nature of all three, if new language is to stay, the learner needs to notice it. Yes, it’s a lot to do with recycling, revisiting and re-ordering - techniques for recurrent cognitive interaction with the language. But it’s also about appropriate selection of teaching material.
That’s where ‘language-to-go’ comes in.

Making connections - how to help your students engage with texts
As a teacher, you have a crucial role in connecting the students and the book they are using and this is most critical when you’re dealing with reading and listening texts. The coursebook contains dynamic and interesting material and there are plenty of inventive ideas on the page itself, so - hopefully - the class will find the texts and activities engaging and stimulating.
However, some students do not always relate enthusiastically to things they have to do in school, and of course there are days when they seem to have no energy at all.

On days like these, it’s useful to have one or two tricks up your sleeve to help them rediscover their enjoyment of the learning process.
In this talk, we will consider how to enhance the book’s great ideas with techniques that engage your students’ curiosity, exploit what they already know and generally help them look at or listen to the texts - in other words connect - in a fresh and inquisitive way.
