How can a teacher of English open children’s minds, inspire them and create opportunities for effective teaching and learning? Research into successful learning highlights the importance of developing the whole range of skills, such as reading, mathematical and scientific thinking, ability to communicate and cooperate with other people, ability to use modern information and technology resources, and last but not least, the ability to reflect on the process of learning. According to Nowa Podstawa Programowa these skills are indispensable for getting to know the intricacies of the contemporary world and being ready for creative problem solving. This may sound quite academic and serious, yet during a lesson of English even very young children can be involved in tasks which aim at developing their basic learning skills and English at the same time.

Enhancing pupil enjoyment of language & other cultures
in the transition stage – Daniel Brayshaw
As your primary learners develop as individuals, so the approach to teaching and learning evolves. This session looks at managing the transition between lower-primary and gimnazjum and suggests practical and memorable tasks and activities (including the use of songs, raps and chants) to encourage your learners to communicate confidently and read and listen accurately. By suggesting an early focus on pronunciation and polite interaction, the session will show how you can prepare learners for the socio-linguistic demands they will face as the curriculum develops and as they encounter the language beyond the classroom in their everyday lives.
