The Gimnazjum Examination is probably the first real examination that our students have taken in English. The step from our communicative classrooms to the test tables can seem daunting and it is, unfortunately, all too common for students to underperform in tests, to struggle to apply what they know in the best way.

Virtually any language exam is totally predictable in form. Therefore, it seems logical that while preparing the learners we focus on task types. The process, however, is usually predictable too, as it invariably amounts to repeating the same patterns over and over again thus breeding classroom boredom and more importantly, shifting learners’ attention from content to form.

This talk will discuss the importance of task awareness at the Matura level but also how to strike the right balance between form and content so as to foster skills-based competence.
