The gimnazjum period was in many ways envisaged as a bridging period between childhood and adolescence; between the contrasting educational demands of primary and high school. In this period students meet their first real exam, representing a midpoint between the less formal and stressful sprawdzian and the more serious matura.

In terms of language development the gimnazjum period is a period of linguistic growth and development and this session will demonstrate the different ways this growth can be encouraged, in terms of lexis (words ➙ phrases ➙ functions),
skills (micro skills ➙ whole text work) and other areas, and how this growth can be married to effective and creative preparation for the gimnazjum exam.

12:15 – 13:15 Striking a Successful Balance - Peter Moran
As teachers preparing our students for the matura exam we often feel trapped between a rock and a hard place: having to prepare students for their exam and successfully guide them through the tricks and traps awaiting them in the short term (exam preparation and training) while simultaneously preparing them for life outside the classroom and maintaining their enthusiasm for the subject in the long term (language development and motivation). Yet what may appear at first as a conflict difficult to resolve is in fact a false dichotomy: without engagement effective exam preparation will be much harder, and unless the material's usefulness is clear then motivation will be short-lived.
This session will look at how to maintain motivation and engagement while still preparing thoroughly and effectively for the matura exam.

There will be a particular focus on the oral examination and the session will contain practical suggestions and activities for use in class.
