This presentation looks at how one school in Malaysia, working with the British Council, took a holistic approach to creating their own two year CPD plan for Primary and Secondary school teachers. Research tells us that the best investment a school can make to increase quality in the classroom is to invest in the teachers, and to invest in on-going systems of Continuous Professional Development (Hattie 2008).

However, schools sometimes take a short term approach and choose one training course after another, on a year by year basis.

This may be due to budget planning cycles, or a lack of awareness of alternatives.
When one school approached us to help train their teachers, we realized that the Teaching for Success approach gave us an opportunity to frame their needs within a bigger picture of on-going development for all their staff.
This talk will explain how we used the CPD Framework for Educators to empower the school senior and middle management to identify their own needs, as well as the needs of the English teachers in their school.
You will learn how we created a longer term development plan for all staff by working bottom-up, and by engaging all stakeholders in the school. I will also explain how having no idea at the start, how things would work out in the end, was actually a good thing!
About the speaker:
Chris Thorn is a Senior Training Consultant within the British Council’s English for Education System’s team in Malaysia. In addition to occasional CELTA and DELTA tutoring, Chris works with both private and government organisations to develop and deliver programmes that facilitate better quality teaching and learning in Malaysian institutions.
