Writing isn’t thought to be much fun for learners, whether they have to do it in class or at home.

It’s usually perceived as boring, time-consuming, non-communicative activity. As teachers, we have to include writing in our syllabuses, but we try to keep to a minimum – not least because it takes so long to mark properly. But does it have to be like that?
In this presentation, I’ll challenge some long-held assumptions about writing, and try to show that writing at the lower-secondary level can be communicative, quick and fun.

I’ll also have something to say about marking! I’ll use examples from Upbeat and New Exam Challenges, as well as plenty of my own ideas.

Life is full of difficult choices. Should I go to the gym, or stay in bed? Should I mark some more writing, or switch on the TV? For teachers of English, planning and managing successful lessons also involves making choices.

Decisions must be taken about which areas of language to focus on and in which contexts to set this language; which methodology to use and what sort of activities to include; and how best to use the new curriculum to prepare upper-secondary students for the Matura exam.
This session will look at the decision making in the language classroom and will analyse the factors involved in making the most beneficial choices for our students. In doing this, we will be exploring a variety of methodological approaches and practical activities to take back to the classroom. The session will be illustrated with examples from Pearson’s new upper- secondary course, MATURA Choices.
