Writing is often seen as a challenging, solitary and laborious activity. As a result, the skill is neglected in the classroom and delegated as a homework task.

The purpose of writing is to demonstrate learners' ability to use the language correctly and attend to the issues given in the task, with the communicative goal receiving little or no attention.
The session will look at the writing skill more closely. We will be paying special attention to writing as a process in which learners work collaboratively and to achieve a communicative goal. We will also look at ways of how to mark writing without having to spend hours correcting every blatant departure from what is considered standard English

Studies have shown that, when learners are given choice, their motivation and performance improves.

Learner choice is also essential to 21st century skills which are emphasised in the new curriculum for upper-secondary (e.g. self-assessment, using different sources of information, communication strategies). In this session, we will look at practical ways in which choice can be built into lessons. First, we will see how this can be done when dealing with language: guided functional and lexical networks which give students options; well-signposted extra practice and reference material; self-check activities linked to further practice.

We will also see choice at work in skills activities: productive tasks with personalisation and choice; different levels of difficulty for listening texts and alternative channels (audio or audiovisual); a bank of optional communication strategies related to tasks.
In addition to this, we will examine how Matura practice and exam strategies can be linked with classroom lessons. Finally, we will see how online components can introduce blended learning with interactive exercises in reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammar that create meaningful out-of-class assignments as well as personalising learning.
