Upper-primary students experience the first symptoms of a transition period, i.e. pains of growing up. The different organization of school life imposes new requirements so not-surprisingly at the same time they expect to be treated in a different way by adults. For example, they need more space for developing their independence and taking responsibility for themselves and their own learning.
This means that academic, research-based ideas have to be turned into practical, tangible tasks that can be used on everyday basis in the classroom.

Many of us have experienced the stress of taking a driving test. Everything has to be done 'by the book' - or we fail. Yet, once out on the road armed with our license, things start to be a little different, and we develop our own way of driving appropriate to the prevailing conditions.
There are many parallels in the education system. Conflicts exist in terms of school needs versus student needs, in terms of exam requirements versus language development - in other words requirements of the system versus requirements of the real world.

This session will investigate ways of providing a sense of balance between these two apparently conflicting forces.
