There was a time when language learning in class consisted of little more than listening to boring lectures from the teacher about the rules of grammar, then reinforcing this by relentlessly repeating meaningless example sentences. But is this the most effective way for teenagers - or indeed anyone - to gain proficiency in a language? Of course not. There has been a great deal of research over the years into second language acquisition (SLA), and this session will consider how this research has influenced modern day classroom methodology. We will look at some practical ways in which classroom methodology can be made to complement the innate ways in which students learn.

Yet, once out on the road armed with our license, things start to be a little different, and we develop our own way of driving appropriate to the prevailing conditions.
There are many parallels in the education system. Conflicts exist in terms of school needs versus student needs, in terms of exam requirements versus language development - in other words requirements of the system versus requirements of the real world. This session will investigate ways of providing a sense of balance between these two apparently conflicting forces.

Is "real world" language a possibility or a mission impossible in a Matura course? Are the teenagers we work with nowadays the same or different from teenagers from the past? How do the technological changes influence their social and cognitive development? And what do they do spending so much time in front of their computer screens? This session will address all these questions and will also show that teaching for Matura can be a satisfying experience - it doesn't have to be only about exam preparation, it may be about real people talking and writing about the real world out there.
