We have been entrusted with the grand task of educating the young generation, we studied diligently different methods and approaches and now take great pains to put them to practice. We know how to do it. But do we really? Don't we sometimes get lost in the plethora of aims, objectives, priorities, regulations? Don't we lose sight of the wood for the trees?
How about going back to basics? Starting where the child is, looking at the way they are, the way they think, the way they learn and assisting them in discovering the world through English. In this presentation we will LOOK at how a coursebook can help us, rather than hinder, in this endeavour.

Teachers have to focus on an exam but that exam is not as important to the students as the Matura. The imposed syllabus dictates what should be taught but that doesn't always match what the students need linguistically. And the students themselves are usually immersed in exciting new technology but the books that they see in class can sometimes seem flat in comparison. In this session we look at how to stay upbeat in the face of these challenges, using examples from the new course for Gimnazjum, Upbeat.

What does the latest research tell us about teenagers' interests, concerns and motivation? We will consider the implications of this research in designing materials which are relevant to teenagers' interests, and appropriate to their needs. Examples will be drawn from the new Pearson Longman course for upper secondary, Real Life.
