There was a time when language learning in class consisted of little more than listening to boring lectures from the teacher about the rules of grammar, then reinforcing this by relentlessly repeating meaningless example sentences. But is this the most effective way for teenagers - or indeed anyone - to gain proficiency in a language? Of course not. There has been a great deal of research over the years into second language acquisition (SLA), and this session will consider how this research has influenced modern day classroom methodology. We will look at some practical ways in which classroom methodology can be made to complement the innate ways in which students learn.

Yet, once out on the road armed with our license, things start to be a little different, and we develop our own way of driving appropriate to the prevailing conditions.
There are many parallels in the education system. Conflicts exist in terms of school needs versus student needs, in terms of exam requirements versus language development - in other words requirements of the system versus requirements of the real world. This session will investigate ways of providing a sense of balance between these two apparently conflicting forces.

This session will take a look at the changing face of teenage life over the years and examine the skills needed to cope, both inside and outside the classroom, with growing up in a demanding and rapidly changing teenage world. The session will include some practical activities and ideas for classroom use.
