Is there a more complicated and confusing time for anyone than the teenage years? To understand and to help teenagers through the process of growing is a challenge for parents and teachers alike.

This session will try to look at the real nature of teenagers – what they are interested in, how they spend their time, what motivates them – and what this means for our teaching. Topics touched on will cover the psychology of the teenage years, motivation, the real language of teenagers and how these can be married with the educational challenges of the teenage years, as well as the Matura examination. The session will include a number of practical activities for use with teenage classes and will also present Real Life, a new course book aimed specifically at this age group.

If there is a defining characteristic of the English language then perhaps it is its astonishingly rich and varied vocabulary and its relative importance in the language system. As Stephen Krashen put it, 'when students travel they do not carry grammar books, they carry dictionaries'. A broad, flexible and deployable vocabulary is the key to learning English and this session will explore the importance of vocabulary and lexis.

The session will include a number of practical activities for introducing, practising, revising and extending vocabulary and will cover both traditional classroom situations and 'digital teaching' – the use of interactive whiteboards and available software in class.
