As teachers we are keen too see our children develop the confidence and ability to use English in class. In this session we’ll be considering the steps we need to take to help our young learners communicate. By exposing them to language in context, providing a variety of activities to enable them to practise and using material that will motivate them and catch their imagination we can ensure that the steps will be in the right direction.

The base rule of teaching children is to treat their knowledge and experience as a starting point for introducing or further developing their skills. Children are more likely to participate in activities that they know and like. There is no doubt that children like games and that the concept of playing games is second nature to them. When children play games, they not only perfect their skills, but also learn new things. The topic of this presentation is the ways of modifying and adapting games used in English lessons. However, I would particularly like to show you some practical tips on how to popularise less well-known games with the aim of developing your pupils’ English.

All of our students are different. Our attempts to engage each of our student’s attention and hold it is the difference between success or failure both for them and for us. Students who do not feel catered for or part of the class not only fail but often create management problems. So what can we do? This short session describes a practical approach that looks for common ground to motivate and stimulate interest in all our students. Working with large groups of mixed-ability learners isn’t about preparing 20 or 30 different lessons for every class, but it’s about using techniques and materials that speak to everyone. We are all different but we also have many things in common.
