Th e introduction of the New Core Curriculum (nowa podstawa programowa) to grades 1-3 of primary schools in 2008 brings a welcome change
– English gains more importance and the number of English lessons grows to 2 hours per week. Th is talk presents New Sparks in the light of
the New Core Curriculum as a course that can be used both by language teachers and early education teachers, and focuses on children’s
developmental needs that can be met with the help of the course book.

Tom Hutchinson – “Words, words, words: Th e Importance of Vocabulary”
A lot of attention has been given in language teaching to grammar and skills, but relatively little has been said about the teaching of vocabulary.
Yet, words are the building blocks of language and having a wide range of vocabulary is a vital asset for any language user. With English Across
the Curriculum (or CLIL) becoming an integral part of many national curricula, the importance of vocabulary is increasing, as learners will
be exposed to a much wider range of subject areas and will require the words to operate eff ectively in those areas. Th is talk will look at why and
how vocabulary should be taught.

Teresa Doğuelli has been a teacher/teacher trainer/ UCLES assessor for over 30 years. She has taught children, teenagers and adults and she has designed
and run courses, seminars and workshops for students, teachers, trainers, inspectors and parents. She is currently working freelance, training teachers andwriting materials for Teaching Teenagers for Oxford University Press. She has an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Reading and her specialinterests are the applications of drama and aff ect, NLP and brain-based research to the teaching of English as a foreign language.
Tom Hutchinson has taught English in the UK, Germany, and Croatia, and he has given teacher training courses in many other countries around the
world. For a number of years he lectured at the Institute for English Language Education at Lancaster University, UK.
