Olga Gusakovskaya
is a graduate of English Studies and Applied Linguistics. She has been teaching English for 14 years since her graduation from Minsk Linguistic University in Belarus. Her first teaching experience was with adult learners at the Interpreting and Translating Department of her Alma Mater, where she taught for two years. After she had worked for Bell College, Saffron Walden, organizing summer courses for children she moved to Poland and began working for Archibald, a private language school in Warsaw. She taught different types and levels of courses and was one of the teachers to pioneer Teenglish Courses. Having taken particular liking for working with adolescents she started teaching at the Group of Schools ‘Raszyńska’ in Warsaw, where she currently is the Director of Studies of one of the schools.

She has long been interested in Latin-American culture and cherishes the idea of resuming her post-graduate studies at CESLA, Warsaw University.

You spot the ‘target item’ pieces, complement them with a few more to feature meaning and form and even retrieve the notoriously missing piece of student relevance. There is still a lot to work on, isn’t there?! So you add the building blocks of drilling, eliciting, mingling, recapping… The perfect structure of your exam lesson gradually emerges… But what about the building blocks that you’ve left out today? They will come handy in your next construction efforts.

Assessment as a powerful tool for exam preparation
The change has become reality! It’s high time we got to grips with the new oral matura exam. This will no doubt require quite a few tools – an in-depth knowledge of the exam structure, an awareness of tasks’ specifics as well as an understanding of the new assessment criteria. What are the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of a perfect answer? What strategies are we to equip the students with? How will the answers be assessed?
The purpose of this session is threefold. Firstly, to brush it up on the scope and type of changes in the exam tasks. Secondly, to study various aspects of the new assessment criteria. Thirdly, to acquire hands-on experience of assessing sample exam answers. The session will help participants gain competence in accurate assessment and help them prepare students for the new oral matura exam.
