What’s new with FCE?
An overview and tips for the teacher

In December 2008, FCE will undergo a number of changes. This session will aim to give an overview of how each of the 5 papers will be changing, giving examples of what’s new and
what the candidates can expect. It will also be interspersed with a number of activities that I use with my students In preparing them for the FCE exam. Some of these are very
exam specific, others more general – all will be ready to use when you get to your classroom on Monday!


Exam classes: 5 things teachers need to do & 5 things students need to know

This talk will look at ten things that can help your students in exam preparation classes. First, we will look at five things that teachers need to do in order to get the best from their
students. Then we will consider ways of developing five key skills which your students need to know in order to do well in exams.


CAE – The update unpacked.
How do we as teachers respond in the class?

Changes to CAE are also being introduced in December 2008. The nature of the update to CAE is more thoroughgoing, than FCE, a number of new items are being included for the
first time at this level. This session will aim to go through each paper highlighting the new elements, giving a rational for the update process. It will also include a number of general
tips on teaching exam groups as well as one or two activities which are ready to use.


Exam skills and life skills:
One and the same!

Tasks and strategies to prepare FCE and CAE students for exams need not and should not be a ‘necessary evil’, or just an end in themselves. This talk will show how students at upper-intermediate and advanced levels can be motivated and challenged to develop skills essential for real-life situations, whether work or further education. The focus will be on the productive skills of speaking and writing, and will include ideas on how to make exam preparation fun.
