From Little Things, Big Things Grow..., Grant Kempton

All of us know that the main objective of language learning is communication. However for communication to grow our students need to have the seeds to plant and it is those seeds, grammar and vocabulary, that are a major focus of assessment.

According to results from the most recent analysis provided by the Examination Commission, the greatest weakness among gimnazjum exam candidates revolved around their knowledge and command of środki językowe – language means. So, if our students are laying bad seeds, communication won’t grow and student’s futures may be blocked. There is, therefore a need for teachers to ensure the good seeds are planted before we cultivate the growth of communication. This has therefore placed a clear demand on teachers to work on improving students’ performance in the vital area of grammar and vocabulary. In this workshop we will be looking at how we can ‘cultivate’ our seeds in a way that is both rewarding and motivating for our students, with the help of material taken from Pearson’s Next Move, the 21st century course for 21st century students.

Make Matura Manageable – with the 3 Ms…, Grant Kempton

What tasks do your students struggle with the most at Matura? How can we help them to improve in their areas of difficulty, whilst at the same time help them feel positive about the process of preparing for the exam? This highly practical session will attempt to deal with these important questions. During the workshop, we will remind ourselves of some of the aspects of the new Matura format and task types, and see how the 3 Ms – Motivation, Memorisation and Meaningful context and practice can work together to prepare for a successful performance on the big day. The session will contain a number of easy to prepare practical ideas and tips, and will be illustrated with material taken from Pearson’s new Matura Focus course.
