SESJA I

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step". Teaching English to very young learners is not only this first step, but it is actually a milestone since it lays the foundations for life-long learning. No doubt that apart from being a challenge, a privilege and a joy, teaching this age group is also a great responsibility. Modern teachers are aware that they need to teach more than just -the subject- as their pupils are at an age where so much is happening developmentally. In this session we will be looking at five domains in which children need help with their development. With examples taken from Express Publishing's new series Happy Hearts and Happy Rhymes, we will also be searching for ways of making children's first experience of English memorable, enjoyable and motivating.

SESJA II

Take a little bit of 'Fun Time', add 'Time Out' and pour in numerous inspiring texts. Stir everything, but remember to chop and slice your lessons carefully to avoid over- or under-cooking. Then, heat up the classroom atmosphere by assigning a traditional dictation or an ICT project. To attract considerable attention, sprinkle the class with a morale booster, preferably in the form of a game, a gripping story or a joke ' this will help make your lessons well done! You can also spice them up with the fresh and innovative Interactive Whiteboard Software. Adding this element will make your students burn to learn more and more. SESJA III

In this session we will be looking at classroom control issues. It will be suggested that the easiest way to keep students behaving well is to keep them busy, involved and focussed and that it is easier to channel our students' energy than fight it. We will look at what help is available in terms of methodology and what this means in practical terms. We will also emphasise the importance of teaching in a way which is relevant to our students' experience. In terms of maintaining discipline in a classroom full of emotionally driven teenagers, relevance is crucial to enhance learning and make sense of what is being taught. Analysing the possible causes of problems with discipline will lead us to searching for tips and suggestions of best solutions. After all, "the important thing about a problem is not its solution, but the strength we gain in finding the solution".

TRENERZY:

Alicja Cholewa-Zawadzka is a graduate from the University of Silesia (M.A. in Linguistics) and the University of Economics in Katowice. She is a former DOS and has extensive experience in teaching nearly all age groups, levels and course types. She has worked as an EFL and ESP teacher as well as run tailored courses, esp. in Legal English and Business English. As a teacher trainer for Express Publishing/Egis, she has given a huge number of workshops and seminars for teachers of English. Also, Alicja has been involved both in pre- and in-service training, providing support and giving ideas for teaching. Recently, she has been engaged in developing and editing extra materials for ELT teachers. Alicjas chief professional interests include integrating Interactive Whiteboard and ICT into language teaching. In her private life, she is a passionate skier and dedicated world traveller.
 
Craig Huxley is an international speaker and teacher trainer. After studying at the University of Wolverhampton his teaching career involved students of all ages and social backgrounds, including learners with learning difficulties. For several years he has been working for Express Publishing as an ELT Consultant, visiting schools, observing lessons and introducing the latest Interactive Whiteboard Technology. He is also an oral examiner for the Cambridge ESOL upper suite examinations.
 
Monika Lech is an ELT consultant and teacher trainer at Express Publishing/Egis. She holds an MA from the English Department of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. As a regular speaker and participant in the annual IATEFL Poland conference, she tries to stay on top of the latest trends in EFL methodology and technology, constantly looking for ways of enhancing learning. She has addressed varied audiences giving numerous presentations and running training sessions for teachers of English throughout Poland. She is currently based in Warsaw, where she lives and works combining her passion for English with the pleasure of travelling.
 
Steve Lever holds a BA (Hons) from Leeds University. After working as a teacher of English as a foreign language for 12 years, he moved into ELT consultancy for Express Publishing. In this capacity he has spent the last few years travelling around the world delivering workshops and seminars. He has been a plenary speaker at many international conferences and has also been pleased to be involved in joint projects with the British Council and Education ministries in various countries. He has a strong amateur interest in teaching through drama (a subject on which he has published articles) and the use of NLP in language teaching. He is always on the lookout for ideas that make the EFL classroom a positive place to be.
