Richie Mullaney brings us through a top few of his neighbours’ weird and wonderful customs and traditions. Britain has a rich history of multicultural influences which have led to an extraordinary amount of bizarre traditions between the three countries, but which country out does them all? We’ll compare the three countries top customs and try some out for ourselves! A little sneak peek at the agenda: we’ve got cheese rolling, Morris dancing, pancake racing and gurning! Hogsmeade and Beltane… What are these? Let’s look at some of the oldest festivals in human history, celebrated exclusively in the United Kingdom!

The word Ceilí or Ceilidh (Scots Gaelic) means ‘companions’ and this famous form of cultural dance brings together hundreds of people in easy-to-learn steps. Richie will involve ALL students in a few of the most popular numbers, giving students a taste of Ceilí and only taking a small break to learn a little of Riverdance, one of the fastest forms of dance in the world! Richie has facilitated Ceilí workshops for 8 years now and in countries all over Europe with students from many different cultures and backgrounds. This is a particularly great experience for students of a younger age, or student’s first interactions with a native English speaker.

Richard Mullaney is our very charismatic Irishman, who has been working with Learning Without Borders since 2008. After finishing college, studying Youth & Community Work, he started working full-time with Learning Without Borders providing a range of different talks and workshops whilst also performing in the Wild About Oscar play. Each summer he has worked for a variety of summer schools in both Scotland and England as part of the Activities team management. This has included running Ceilí dances, Discos, as well as excursions to various cities. In Ireland he also worked as a restaurant manager in one of Dublin’s busiest bars, House Dublin. However, he is now back performing in Poland, Italy and Estonia.
