LONDON
“The first image that comes to mind is of walking through the mist across Hyde Park at 6 in the morning to catch the first train back to Oxford. The parks are a wonderful feature of London, and most visitors are amazed at how green the city is - Highgate Woods, Richmond and Wimbledon where I used to go for long runs, Regents Park, Kew Gardens, Hampstead Heath and even Victoria park out East - so called because Queen Victoria pressed for it following an appeal from local residents overwhelmed by the foul air and sickness. The River Thames is also a major symbol of London, and the reason there's a city here at all - the Romans grew one of their major towns here though there had been a settlement for years before. Most of it is walkable, and there are cruisers and fast commuter boats which are a great way to see the old workings of the place - from the old docks to Big Ben. (…) My first visits to London were shopping trips with my Mum in the '50s. It was a very smart place, and made our home town look pretty dowdy. (…) One interesting recent trend is that many people who wouldn't call themselves British or English (and would get sidelong looks if they did!), will happily refer to themselves as Londoners ... and nobody objects. Perhaps this indicates that London is more inclusive than the rest of the country; this is not to say everyone gets on with everyone else, but we rub along pretty well in our ultra cosmopolitan city.”
