Carol has published extensively in the field of teaching English to young learners, including coursebooks, supplementary materials, online storytelling and CLIL projects, as well as many articles on primary ELT methodology. Carol’s award-winning titles include the first edition of Bugs World (with three co-authors) which won a British Council Innovation Award, 500 Activities for the Primary Classroom which was Highly Commended in the ESU Duke of Edinburgh awards, and the children's reader Is it a Butterfly? which won an Extensive Reading Foundation Award (all published by Macmillan

Dr Monika Cichmińska has been teaching English for 20 years. After graduating from the University of Łódź, where she specialised in linguistics, she co-founded Progres, a private language school
in Łódź, where she taught at all levels and was the Director of Studies. In 1999 she finished her doctorate in linguistics and moved to Olsztyn, where she works at the University of Warmia and Mazury. She also works for English Perfect, a private language
school in Olsztyn, where she is the Director of Studies. Apart from that, she likes to work
as a teacher trainer for various institutions. She is also an oral examiner for UCLES (FCE, CAE and CPE).
She enjoys working with people, and likes to combine theory (linguistics, psychology and neuroscience) with practice (teaching English on all levels). She is particularly interested in teaching, or rather uncovering grammar, motivation (of both students and teachers), affective factors in learning, and most of all, what happens in the brain when we learn something new.

In her free time she likes to learn new things, go to the cinema, listen to music, and go for long walks with her son. Her personal idols are Pat Metheny, Cassandra Wilson, Ken Wilber and Gregory House.

The magic of story time

Stories provide a motivating and memorable way to develop language, thinking and social skills in the primary classroom. Stories also link learning English to culture and content from other areas of the curriculum, as well as to children’s real life interests and concerns. This practical session explores the magic of story time in engaging children’s hearts and minds in active, experiential learning and presents a wide range of enjoyable and effective teaching ideas which promote class participation and active language use.

Myths, facts and strategies - yes, we can!

In my view, the main myth concerning the upcoming sprawdzian szóstoklasisty is that you need a special rigorous training programme for the students to pass it. Actually, it would be a big mistake to let the test obsession dominate what we do in the classroom.

I would like to convince you that in fact, this particular exam reflects the kind of language and cognitive skills that our students are able to acquire to a large extent as part of a normal teaching programme. The analysis of the tasks shows that although some of them may indeed prove challenging - and not always because of the language tested - in fact, they can and should be taught rather than simply tested over and over again.

Thus, the session will focus on how we can lead the students towards exam success through smart everyday teaching. In my view, there is no need to get obsessed by the myth of the exam, but with a few easily applicable strategies, we can teach attractively and effectively with sprawdzian in mind.

Text-based teaching and new written ‘matura’ preparation

There is no doubt that the written matura focuses on texts more and more: both in receptive skills - listening and reading - and especially in writing. There is also no doubt that teenagers of the 21st century do not cope well with a more thorough text analysis, not to mention creating their own texts. Yes, they do read and write - but the texts they read and write of their own rarely meet the requirements of any exam, including in particular overall accuracy, vocabulary and grammar range, cohesion and coherence.

It does seem that our students need a carefully guided plan of how to read and analyse texts in order to produce their own - not in the "telegraphic" English they're exposed to, but one in which they have to think about logic and structure of a text. In the
session I'll talk about the necessary ingredients of such a plan of action. I'll also look at samples of students' written pieces and point out the areas which need most attention and work.
