11:30-12:30 Usage guides and diagnostic tests: how they can work together

Usage guides occupy the middle ground between grammars and dictionaries, providing in-depth information on specific lexical, grammatical and stylistic problem points. They may be designed for native speakers of a language or for foreign learners; the two types deal mainly with quite different matters. Usage guides are a valuable reference tool for language teachers, who cannot possibly hold in their heads the information needed to correct every mistake and answer every question. They are an equally important resource for students, enabling them to solve language problems for themselves outside of class time, and thus encouraging learner autonomy. With regular updating, usage guides can track changes in the language, and so help teachers to make informed decisions on questions of correctness. Their value can be greatly increased by the use of linked diagnostic tests. These can tell teachers and students which key points of grammar and usage are already known, and which ones need to be learnt or revised. Examples will be taken from Practical English Usage and Grammar Scan.

13:00-14:00 A learner’s thesaurus: helping learners use synonyms effectively

The Oxford Learner’s Thesaurus is a new resource to help advanced learners use English synonyms effectively. It guides them to the best word for the context, with information on meaning, grammar, register, collocations and frequency. This session will show how it can help with vocabulary building and exam preparation, with a focus on exam-style topics and tasks.

11:30-12:30 Reducing Stress in Exam Candidates

Why do learners often find exams so stressful? Does it have to be this way? This session will look at what causes stress in learners preparing for an exam, and will put forward some practical approaches - both pedagogical and physiological - that can easily be incorporated into any exam preparation course to ease the burden and steer learners towards success.

13:00-14:00 Extensive reading - a new classroom challenge

This session will deal with the aspect of extensive reading in the classroom. We will look at different activities that promote the development of the reading skill as well as those that focus on language and cultural issues. All practical and, weather permitting - interactive.
