ZAGADNIENIA:

PRIMARY COLOURS – Regina Raczyńska

From the moment you enter the classroom till the moment you leave it 45 minutes later the world in children’s eyes seems to be quite a different place. They suddenly find themselves in a truly magical reality where suddenly red means czerwony and everybody says hello not cześć. It is like going to the theatre twice a week and you play the director’s role. So let it be the time of fun and play, the time of enjoyment and creativity. Let your students be the actors in this extraordinary performance. During this highly practical presentation you will learn how to give them the primary colours so that they are able to paint the whole rainbow in the future. You will also see that the teachers’ world does not have to be black and white only. The session will be illustrated with some materials taken from Footprints – the new Pearson Education course for the lower primary school.

A MULTI-LAYERED APPROACH TO EXAM PREPARATION – Rob Dean

This session will consider the implications of the new exams for gymnazjum, and look at ways in which we can provide appropriate practice of the various task types whilst broadening our students’ cultural outlook and knowledge of the world at the same time. The session will be practical in nature and aims to provide a number of ‘ready to use’ activities for the classroom.

TEACHING ENGLISH AND DEVELOPING CHILDREN’S THINKING SKILLS – Mariola Bogucka

Undoubtedly one of the keys to developing linguistic intelligence is memory. But learning by heart is by far not enough to master a foreign language to enable children to use in a real-life situation. Research into successful learning highlights the importance of developing children’s thinking skills including their awareness of learning and thinking. Scientific and academic theories can be put into practice at every stage of a lesson of English: input, output and assessment. The workshop will focus on classroom activities and tasks for children that aim at developing their thinking and linguistic skills at the same time.

BRINGING ADVENTURE INTO THE CLASSROOM – Steve Marsland

What role does fun play in the primary classroom? Why is it that children seem to have selective memories? With reference to Sequential Memory Theory the session will look at how and why we remember and store information. As well as providing participants with springboard material, this essentially practical session will look at how the use of a Narrative Approach can help the teacher to stimulate creativity and use it to foster effective learning. Steve also hopes to illustrate the importance of the fun element of teaching!

MANAGING CHANGE IN GIMNAZJUM TEACHING – Piotr Steinbrich

In this talk we are going to look at two aspects of teaching at the lower-secondary level. Firstly, we will continue our search for balancing exam needs with regular teaching practices. In doing so, we will analyze typical course book activities so as to gauge their exam potential. Secondly, we will look at different patterns of student behaviour characteristic of lower-secondary learners with a view to establishing routines that will help us cope with problematic cases.

„CAN WE HAVE AN EASY EXAM, PLEASE?” – Dorota Sapiejewska

New Exam brings yet another aim but challenges remain the same. In the lecture we will concentrate on the correlation between the requirements of the new junior secondary language exam and the way of teaching. Because the new task is achievable, we will help our students build their confidence towards the final exam. We can do it!

THE PEDAGOGY OF CREATIVITY – Peter Moran

We have all watched children play and seen their instinctive creativity and natural curiosity and many of us, as children or as adults, have experienced the extinguishing of that creativity in the classroom. Striving for a balance between control and creativity - between allowing the children the freedom to explore and the importance of setting a direction for their learning - is a challenge for us all. This session will look at what creativity involves in the primary classroom and how we can encourage it and direct it. The session will include practical examples of activities which can be used to develop creativity in all four skills

A MULTI- LAYERED APPROACH TO EXAM PREPARATION – Rob Dean

This session will consider the implications of the new exams for gymnazjum, and look at ways in which
we can provide appropriate practice of the various task types whilst broadening our students’ cultural outlook and knowledge of the world at the same time. The session will be practical in nature and aims to provide a number of ‘ready to use’ activities for the classroom.

THE NEW GIMNAZJUM EXAMINATION – Peter Moran

The new examination for gymnazjum is still something of a mystery, but we know something of the task-types and topics which will be included. This session will provide an overview of the examination and will look at some practical activities which can be used to prepare students for it. We will also consider how elements related to culture can be introduced effectively into the classroom at gymnazjum level. A summary of the activities presented will be available to participants via email after the session.

SEE HOW THEY GROW… – Rob Dean

In the course of this session we will look at ways in which children’s cognitive skills develop as they progress through the primary years, and consider what effect this has on the kinds of approaches and activities we use in the classroom. We will focus in particular on grades 4-6 – this being the transition stage between primary and gymnazjum, and present a number of practical ways in which the coursebook can be exploited to suit the changing needs and preferences of this age group.

LEARNING: THE TREASURE WITHIN – “EDUKACJA JEST W NIEJ UKRYTY SKARB” – Mariola Bogucka
What treasure is hidden in learning? The first part of the workshop will be devoted to a discussion of aims of modern education recommended by the National Curriculum published in August 2007 and respective European documents, whereas during the second part we will be exploring the complex nature of practical activities and materials for upper-primary learners. Can teachers of English help their students find the hidden treasure ???

ENJOYABLE MOMENTS – Piotr Steinbrich

With the new Core Curriculum, primary teachers are now facing new challenges of how to integrate English with other curriculum subjects. In this session I will show some practical ideas that can be used in the primary classroom that make the shift not only possible but also memorable and enjoyable both for the children and for the teacher.

FOLLOW THE FOOTPRINTS – Monika Rajche

Be fresh, be creative, keep the discipline in the classroom, maintain students’ interest, teach in line with the new core curriculum, cater for all your students’ needs, stimulate their personal, cognitive, social & artistic development; impress the parents ... sounds familiar? During this highly practical
50-minute presentation you will learn how to meet the above expectations and how ... not to go crazy! The session will be illustrated with some materials taken from Footprints – the new Pearson Education course for the lower primary school.
