Programme:

14:00 | Registration

14:30 | Effective, successul, fun and brain-friendly - on good foreign language lessons.

Bartłomiej Jaślikowski

The workshop is aimed at those teachers who reflect on the effectiveness of their lessons and the impact of their teaching methods on the motivation and memory of their students.
In the light of recent neurological research it is crucial to reflect on our lesson plans and their adjustment to the reality of our hardworking brains in the process of learning. Are we aware of the neurological needs of our students? What lesson structure would seem most effective in this respect? What methods would fully engage students in the 45 minutes we have with them? What activity types could guarantee a deep enough information processing?
In the 90 minutes of our workshop we will answer the above-mentioned questions and more. You will hear about senses, repetition, personalization, talents, meeting needs and … the little written helpers teachers hate so much which in reality are definitely a brainchild of a genius

16:15 | Love and marriage or how to work with your coursebook... with love at second sight.

Ewa Piotrowska

During this very practical session we will show you how to look at your coursebook from at least three completely different angles - how to adjust coursebook activities to the needs and possibilities of a particular group, how to change boredom into curiosity and cramming into effective memorizing. You will also learn how a coursebook is created and why it may not be as groundbreaking as your students and you would wish it to be. Last but not least – you will see how to turn the boring elements into motivating and inspiring aspects of your courses. In other words: how to serve so that it tastes superb!

18:00 | Let me assess you! Or on handling progress assessment - one of the most problematic areas of teacher's work.

Czesław Kiński, Jacek Łagun

Assessment of students’ progress at any age belongs to one of the most problematic areas of teachers’ work. Evaluating our student’s work we touch upon different spheres of this person’s life: emotional, motivational, intellectual… What is and is not progress assessment? What should and shouldn’t it be?
The last session we invite you to will be both practical and reflective. We will discuss issues which at first glance have not much to do with assessment: praise, punishment, hormones of happiness and stress, relations based on appreciation. We will build a Decalogue of assessment, and will explain what Manfred Spitzer meant when saying that motivational techniques resemble persuading someone full to believe that he is hungry.
